About

Atanansi Community Based Organization

Atanansi Community Based Organization (CBO) located in Luuka District of Uganda is a community development initiative that focuses on the rural poor especially children, youth, and women. Atanansi has three interconnected priority areas: 1-) Holistic education for Children, 2-) Livelihoods development for Women, and 3-) Youth Entrepreneurial skills and talent development. The three focus areas are interconnected and in line with the current social-economic realities in Uganda, and specifically in Luuka District. A community grade school, a local women’s group, and a youth group are already operational and at different levels of development. Our goal is to facilitate families to break out of the cycle of poverty so as to live in dignity. A detailed conceptual, program, and administrative framework of Atanansi CBO is available on request.

Access to Education

Access to a good education is one avenue of facilitating children break out of the cycle of poverty.

Atanansi Parent teacher interactionAtanansi (Athanasius) Grade School located in Luuka District of Uganda, is a community founded school that serves children from economically disadvantaged, rural, subsistence farming communities. The school does not receive any government support and depends entirely on the financial support of the students’ parents.

Our philosophy as a community is that children need a strong grade school education if they are to succeed later in school and in life. Strong reading, writing, arithmetic, and good relational skills set kids up for future success in education and in life.

Previously, children might have studied on an empty stomach, but now they are given one cup of porridge so that they can better concentrate. The porridge is more filling than it is nutritious, but it is a good start. The school needs support to start producing its own nutritious food.

A good education begins with a good learning environment, which includes benches, desks, a sturdy roof, solid walls, a blackboard, a kitchen, a bathroom and a teacher’s lounge. Developing a good learning environment, however, has been a challenge to this community school as it costs money to build such structures.  Sound, permanent buildings would provide an environment conducive to learning by sheltering students from the elements: twice annual rainy season downpours, early morning cold snaps and dusty winds.

School administrators and teachers report to work at 7:30AM and leave at 6:00PM, all while earning the equivalent of $65.00 US/month.  What motivates them is their desire to help children break out of the cycle of poverty, believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

A gift from you can go a long way in helping Atanansi School in her building efforts, buying scholastic materials, buying food, games and sports equipment, teachers stipends, musical instruments, and provision of scholarships.
